Code Switching

Sometimes when one's life is moving too fast it needs to be slowed down. However, realizing the speed of one’s life is not an easy task when the speed is above normal. I know this first hand because I’m going through it now. I’m slowing down my life from the intense speed it was at. When everything is fun and games it’s hard to get serious for those necessary moments because mentally you can be unaware of realizing when it is time to get serious. The name of the technique used to switch from being serious to having fun is called “code switching.” I learned about this term in high school, the literal meaning comes from being able to switch languages within a conversation, but if you analyze the meaning a bit more and think about it, the body is a language as well. We all code switch because very few people act the same way they do outside and inside of a place or home. It is a natural trait most people learn at an early age. Having a fast lifestyle paralyzes this ability because a certain kind of action begins to stick with an individual, making it hard to switch personalities back and forth for certain occasions. Code switching is essential for obtaining different connections such as jobs, learning opportunities, friendships, and even life lessons. However, all of these could be lost if your lifestyle is moving too fast. Moving too slow has its consequences as well, so a balance must be maintained in order to progress sufficiently in life. As difficult as it may seem my readers, once you find that balance and get used to that speed, in time it would become a healthy habit and you will get further in life.

Leaving The Past Behind You

It is not easy to change from somebody you use to be into somebody you want or need to be. Especially when there is a constant reminder of who you were this makes the change more difficult. Change is not something that can occur overnight. However, if you wake up every morning feeling like the person you were yesterday, then you are only going to continue to live in the past. Living in the past is a haunting of one’s self. We cannot look to change when we are constantly reminding ourselves of who we were. As human beings we are drawn to what we know and what we experience the most. Theoretically speaking, it is difficult to shift and become somebody new or different when you keep reliving the past. You end up making the same mistakes and not moving forward towards the person you want to be because you keep looking back. Literally speaking, it is impossible to know where you are going when you are constantly looking behind you. This is how the haunting of the past works. If you keep looking back, you would never get to where you need to go. Nonetheless, understanding your past and learning from it then moving forward is what can make a brighter future; a change in one’s self. Then it would be easier to do as Mahatma Gandhi said “you must be the change you wish to see in the world.” Once the constant reminders of the past aren’t holding you back the future will seem so much closer than what is was before. So remember my readers the past is there to guide you to a better future, not to guide you into an even worst past. Use your experiences wisely.

Trying To Try

Growing up, the way I viewed trying was in a negative way. I felt trying implied the attempt of doing something with a chance it would not be executed.  From that mindset I began to think that I did not have to try, and all I had to do was actually do. Since my thought process developed from that I saw things, actions, and goals as do’s and don’ts. It was either I can do something or I can’t do something. I feel as if a lot of people from my generation and especially my neighborhood, Bronx New York, felt the same way. There are multiple reasons why this would and could happen. One of the simplest reasons I can see is communication. Today people can instantly communicate with anybody they want, whenever and wherever they want. This creates this laziness because people actually choose whether or not they want to communicate with certain people. This is mind blowing because I am sure this was not the intent of communication in 1792 when Claude Chappe created the first long-distance semaphore telegraph line. Hundreds of years ago intellectual human beings pondered for days trying to figure out how we as a people can communicate with each other and now today we are blocking one another out with this privileged sense of communication. People actually tried to communicate hundreds of years ago and today it is either you do or you don’t. The idea of actually trying to do something is getting worse as everyday activities become easier to be done. Trying creates experience and knowledge learning how things are what they are. Without trying there I’ll be no understanding, just what is. This is what I learned after looking back at my life and all those years of not trying to do anything and just doing. Well I am here to tell you readers that if you are the type of person to just get by and let things happen naturally, that will only get you so far in life. It’s the people that try who succeed because they are the ones learning and obtaining the knowledge in order to gain. I think if more people tried, life would become easier, less lazy, and things would have more meaning.
