I Have A Dream MLK Tribute

Living The Dream

I had a dream,
Turning it into a reality is harder then it seems
Especially when the world continues to spin never stopping for a scene
A moment created to mean,
More than a human being
More than a person place or thing
A moment more symbolic than a casket or wedding ring
Because when that moment is lived that dream,
Wakes up
Born to bring brilliance embracing the boldness of a better beginning
Catching confidence controlling outcomes and continuing success
I had this dream
But now it is a reality living with me everyday
I live the dream
And I sleep with reality
- Everette Hamlette

I wrote this poem in honor of the 50th anniversary of the “I Have A Dream Speech” delivered by Martin Luther King Jr. Please enjoy this poem and leave constructive criticism. It’s just a draft I intend to improve upon it in the future.

What Words Mean To You

I believe some individuals today usage of words truly lost its meaning. I’m just not talking about the words such as, passion, hate, and trust. I’m also talking about traditional curse words, words designed to bring certain races down, and words created to cripple one’s mind. The sad part about it is, with all this technology, some people aren’t even capable of stepping forward and understanding what these words mean. I was always taught to use what you got, and speak what you know. Two very important ideas, so dangerous, if blended together perfectly can create a genius. A genius just isn’t somebody who knows everything; in fact, I view geniuses as the exact opposite. I view a genius as an individual that doesn’t know everything, accepts that, and still continues to push oneself and learn new things; increasing one’s knowledge. Sad to say with the language being used around me I witness less geniuses and more sheep in the herded up society. I ask my readers this question, do you use all the opportunities available around you? Do you speak about what you know? If so, you my friend are on a path to greater knowledge… If not, take advantage before life takes advantage of you because time kills. Number one cause of death in the world is wasted time!

First Blog

Hello blogging world! My name is Everette Stylish Hamlette, yes that’s my real middle name,  and I am a upcoming writer from the Bronx. Quick notes on me if you didn’t read my "About Me" section is, I'm a college student at Centenary College, Communications major, Creative Writing minor, poet, upcoming Journalist, born and raised in The South Bronx, and just a normal guy. For a while I've been waiting for the perfect opportunity to start blogging and you want to know what I realized readers? I realized that people potentially spend their whole life waiting for the "right moment" or the "perfect opportunity." People stare at that next step and are often too afraid to take it as if they would slip, fall, and tumble down the whole flight of stairs. Want to know something else? It shouldn't be a secret by now... I'm tired of that mentality! The right way to go about goals in life is to plan and then stick to the plan. People are sometimes too busy planning for the future that they forget to plan for the now. Wasting time and time is not something that should be wasted in one’s life unless you're a God! It’s always tomorrow and never today for some people. I was a victim of this mental crime, this self-imprisonment of one’s self. This caged present and fear of heights! However, change presented itself today and I took advantage of it! In the movie We Brought A Zoo, Matt Damon as Benjamin Mee said something extremely important that was a gear for my life for many years. I lived by these words before I even heard this quote because I am a go getter! He said "you know, sometimes all you need is twenty seconds of insane courage. Just literally twenty seconds of just embarrassing bravery. And I promise you, something great will come of it.," just twenty seconds and the course of your life can drastically change! I've been living this way my whole life and I've been progressing day by day mentally and physically! All because I do not fear making mistakes. Mistakes are lessons and without lessons you won't learn. If you're not willing to learn you might as well drop out of the school we all call life. Now my final questions are directed specifically to you my readers, do you plan for the future as well as today? Do you take the risk and devote twenty seconds to a courageous act? If so you are living life to the fullest and enjoying every second of it! If not... You better check yourself and rethink the status quo!
